Re-Elect Joel Horton for Idaho Supreme Court!

Thank you so much for your support in 2008. Justice Joel Horton is seeking his second term as a Justice on the Idaho Supreme Court.

Justice Horton has deep roots to Idaho and the public service of Idahoans. He is an Idaho native, born in Nampa and graduated cum laude from the University of Idaho College of Law. He performed undergraduate studies at Boise State University and Northwest Nazarene University before graduating from the University of Washington.

Justice Joel Horton has twenty years of judicial experience, serving on the Idaho Supreme Court, as a District Judge and Magistrate Judge. He was a prosecutor in Twin Falls and Ada counties and a deputy attorney general. He began his career in a small law firm in Lewiston. Horton has nearly thirty years of experience as a lawyer, prosecutor and as a judge at all levels of practice in Idaho. But it is the public service he conducts out of the courtroom that helps just as many people.

“I believe the role of a judge, whether on the trial bench or in an appellate capacity, is to uphold the Idaho and United States constitutions and the laws of this state. I do not decide cases based upon my personal feelings as to what the law ought to be,” said Justice Horton. “We must not tilt the scales of justice in favor of a group of special interests. If special interest groups believe they can control the Supreme Court, then the future of justice in Idaho is in peril.”

Justice Joel Horton’s endorsements run the length and breadth of Idaho—from both major political parties. Here, politics recognizes his legal reputation and long record of public, and personal, service to our state. Appointed to the bench by both Governors Batt and Otter, he carries the endorsements of Lt Governor Brad Little, Secretary of State Ben Ysursa, and prosecutors and law enforcement leaders statewide. To emphasize the bipartisan nature of this race, Horton has also been endorsed by Democratic candidate for governor A.J. Balukoff and former attorney general candidate Keith Roark.

Horton points to his leadership in making Idaho’s court’s more accessible for its citizens. His work led to the creation of court assistance offices in every county in this state – places where people unable to afford attorneys can obtain forms and information as to how to present their cases in court. He has volunteered and served as a mentor on professional ethics for new law students with all of the law schools in Idaho.

Justice Joel Horton has served as president of his local Rotary club in Boise. He volunteers to help Idahoans as a volunteer for the Red Cross, Paint the Town and Rake Up Boise. At Hope House, Horton has 15 years of service, much of it as a coach for the softball, basketball and football teams. Each year Horton says he prefers “Coach Joel” to “Justice Horton,” but hears both of them often. Justice Joel Horton is an Idaho original: A legal scholar with strong experience but with a compassionate heart for Idaho and Idaho’s children. He knows that public service does not stop at the courthouse door.
